Frequently asked questions

What qualification does a Dramatherapist need to have?
All qualified practicing dramatherapists must have a Masters in Arts Degree training which involves extensive clinical placements in both educational and mental health settings, their own individual and group therapy and regular supervision. They must also be professional members of the national regulation body the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists (IACAT) and be fully insured to practice.

What is the difference between creative arts therapies and psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a profession which is based upon Counselling and focuses mainly on talking and discussing clients' emotional issues with the therapist. In the creative arts therapies clients work through a creative process which will help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and process the emotions that need to be channelled. Dramatherapy also acknowledges the connection between mind and body by engaging the whole person in action. Emotional and personal issues can be discussed verbally if the client wishes to do so but a creative approach is always encouraged, for it can provide a different way to look into oneself and often an insight that can help us to understand ourselves better.

Do I need to be a “creative person” to join a creative arts therapy group?
Even if you feel you are not creative you will surprise yourself at how easily you might be able to acess your creativity during a session for you will be working in a non threatening, confidential and supportive environment.  Creativity comes in many forms and often it is blocked by our past memories or feelings of not being good enough and/or when emotions are troubiling us. Unblocking our creativity comes hand in hand with unblocking our own healing process.
